HomeFinger-joint box generator
Finger-joint box generator
Draw a press-fit box from the inside or the outside. Thickness sets the finger depth, and kerf widens every tab and narrows every slot so the joint closes after the beam burns its path. Add a lift-off lid and cross-lapped dividers when the box needs them.
Exports SVG and DXF. See also Kerf test and calculator, Living hinge, Engraving jig.
Left to right, across the front.
Front to back.
From the kerf test. Zero draws a perfect theoretical fit.
Inside 114 × 74 × 44 mm. Outside 120 × 80 × 50 mm.
Fingers: 39 along the length, 25 along the depth, 15 up the height.
Sheet 376.36 × 179.44 mm. 6 pieces.
Red paths cut. Blue paths score. Black paths engrave. Import at 100% scale.
How to use it
- Measure the sheet with calipers. A board sold as 3 mm is often closer to 2.9 or 3.2.
- Cut the kerf test and type that kerf here. The tool offsets the cut by half of it.
- Choose inside or outside dimensions. The other size is shown before you download.
- Import the SVG or DXF at 100% scale. Red is cut. Black labels sit in the gaps — score them lightly or delete them.
- Cut one corner from scrap before you cut the whole box.

Questions
Why is the finger count odd?
An odd count puts the same joint — tab or slot — at both ends of an edge. The corners then close instead of finishing on an empty notch.
How is kerf applied?
The cut path is moved outward by half the kerf. Tabs get wider by the full kerf and slots get narrower by the full kerf, so the burned edge lands on the size you asked for.
Do the dividers reach the floor?
They stop 2 mm short of the floor and the lid. That keeps the slots inside the walls instead of slicing through the finger joints. The two directions cross with half-laps.
Will this import at the right size?
The SVG width and height are in millimeters, and the DXF header sets units to millimeters. In LightBurn or xTool Creative Space, import at 100% and do not rescale.
